New Las Cruces Utilities Office Opens

Two days before the official opening of the Las Cruces Utilities (LCU) East Mesa Customer Service Center, the ribbon was ready and so were the customers. “We had to turn away two residents who came by to pay,” said Estela Sauceda, LCU customer service supervisor. “It speaks to the need that we want to address in this area.”

During his speech at the ribbon cutting, Mayor Ken Miyagishima said that Las Cruces works hard to make things easier for residents, and the opening of this LCU center is the perfect example. “It started as an idea, then with the support of the City Council and Utilities Board we were able to make it happen. Residents now have closer access to Customer Service and an easier way to pay their utility bills,” explained Miyagishima.

The new service center will provide much closer access for approximately 10,000 LCU customers living on the city’s East Mesa, especially those previously served by Jornada Water Company and Mesa Development Center. Instead of driving to City Hall to make or drop off their payments, customers can stop by the East Mesa Customer Service Center at 5195 Bataan Memorial West, featuring slightly modified hours - 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

District 5 City Councilor Gill Sorg, in whose district the new center resides, couldn’t be more pleased and has already spread the news to his constituents. “It’s a great step to decentralize city services to save mileage and that extra planning, for customers who need to talk to Utilities.”

“This is a testament to the city’s forward thinking,” agreed City Councilor Gabriel Vasquez.

When fully staffed, five dedicated employees will be sited at the new location: one Cashier to take payments; one Collector to assist with payment plans; a Customer Service Representative (CRS) to assist with activations and deactivations; one CSR Sr. to assist residential customers and builders/contractors; and one Supervisor.

“The new Customer Service Center is not just for nearby residents,” explained Jose Provencio, LCU business services administrator. “Any citizen can stop by. It’s about maximizing our service for all of our customers.”
