New Mexico Approves New Propane Rules
New Mexico – Thousands of propane customers in New Mexico will have more rights to information and transparency from their providers under a new rule that will take effect Dec. 15.
The state Public Regulation Commission recently approved the new propane rule after a yearlong effort to create the measure.
New Mexico is one of only four states to regulate propane dealers.
Neither consumers or the propane companies are completely happy with the resulting rule, and at least one propane company manager says he thinks the industry will appeal portions of the rule.
The state Legislature approved a law in 2009 giving regulators authority to establish a propane rule. Consumer advocates, residents and propane companies met with PRC staff a dozen times over the last year trying to hammer out an agreement.
