New Mexico Auditor: Require Disclosure Of Donations To Inaugural Committees

Senator Timothy Keller (D)

New Mexico’s state auditor says….donations to inaugural committees should be fully disclosed.

New Mexico does not require disclosure of donations and spending by inauguration committees.  And we’re talking about big money…nearly a million dollars raised for the inauguration of Governor Susana Martinez.  In November, the Albuquerque Journal reported the FBI was investigating the 2010 inauguration.  Martinez has denied any wrongdoing.

New Mexico state auditor Tim Keller told KUNM….disclosure is needed.

The Albuquerque Journal reported the Martinez inauguration committee raised $960,000.   It said most of the money came from $25,000 and $10,000 donations by energy companies that do business in the state.  That’s far above the state campaign contribution limit of $5,000.  But once again, New Mexico law does not designate donations to inaugural committees as campaign contributions.  It’s unclear if the state legislature will address the loophole during the current session.
