New Mexico To Continue Using Federal Health Exchange

New Mexico will continue using a federal online system for another year to enroll individuals in health insurance plans.  The state's health insurance exchange governing board voted Friday to rely on the federally computer system for determining eligibility and to enroll individuals starting in November when the next open enrollment begins.

A majority of the board worried that New Mexico wasn't ready to switch to a state-run online system for individuals. Businesses have been using the state system since last October.

The exchange serves as a marketplace for buying medical coverage.

New Mexico has been using the federally online system since the state launched its exchange last year. However, technical problems plagued the start-up of the federal system.

Board vice chairman Jason Sandel supported moving to the state online system.
