Commentary: The Democratic Party of New Mexico Chair Richard Ellenberg released to following statement after Senate Republicans released the healthcare bill they drafted behind closed doors:
"Republicans are actively working to take away the health care many New Mexicans rely on to stay healthy. Under the Republican plan children will go without doctor appointments, rural hospitals will be forced to close, and heath care professionals in our state will see their jobs disappear. .
"Governor Martinez and Lieutenant Governor John Sanchez have remained silent on healthcare, instead of standing up to protect healthcare for New Mexicans in every corner of the state. And Steve Pearce has already made it very clear that he is willing to kick people off their healthcare coverage.
"We need everyone to come together to build on the progress our state has seen under the Affordable Care Act and to increase health care access for all New Mexicans "
On Saturday, New Mexicans showed that they’re watching the secretive health care process closely, and they stood up against Trumpcare at 20 simultaneous events throughout the state. The Democratic Party of New Mexico, Indivisible, Progressive Democrats of America, and Working Families Party teamed up to organize the events, which served as forums for New Mexicans to share their stories and support healthcare access for all New Mexicans.
