New Mexico Fire Crews Next Duty: Arizona

Several dozen firefighters from New Mexico are heading to Arizona to battle the Slide Fire burning in an around Oak Creek Canyon south of Flagstaff.

The New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department says the crews going include two 10-member hand crews from the department's Returning Heroes Fire Program for military veterans.

According to the department, those crews are being joined by two New Mexico State Forestry Division engines from the Las Vegas District, the Red River Fire Department hand crew and two additional personnel from local fire departments.

State Forestry Resource Protection Bureau Chief Donald Griego says New Mexico is able to assist neighboring Arizona because fire occurrence in New Mexico so far this year is less than has occurred in past years.
