New Mexico Governor Rejects Call To Add Bill Barring Border Wall On State Land

KRWG News

Commentary: Santa Fe, N.M. – Today, Rep. Bill McCamley (D-Mesilla Park) expressed disappointment after Governor Martinez rejected House Democrats plea to add bill barring border wall construction on state land to the legislative session.

“We have a responsibility to stand up for our communities and our state’s economy” said Rep. Bill McCamley. “Although, Governor Martinez said time and again that she would never support a wall on our border, and we had a solution to ensure state land could not be used for this divisive purpose which would damage our economy and tear families apart—she declined to address this issue.”

On Monday, House Democrats called on Governor Martinez to add House Bill 138 to the legislative session, barring the Trump Administration from building a border wall along state-owned lands. Construction of a border wall could not only hurt southern New Mexico families; it could also be detrimental to the trade relationship New Mexico has with Mexico.
