New Mexico Labor Officials Report Job Growth In January

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico labor officials say the state has marked another month of positive job growth, meaning there were 5,900 more jobs in January than the same time last year.

The Department of Workforce Solutions says over-the-year job growth was 0.7 percent, slightly down from 0.9 percent in December.

The unemployment rate did rise to 7.3 percent in January, up from 6.6 percent the previous month. The seasonally adjusted rate for both December and January was slightly lower at 7 percent.

Labor officials say New Mexico has had several consecutive months of positive over-the-year job growth. That follows a 32-month period in which the state experienced nearly constant declines.

For January, the department's payroll survey showed employment increased in six industries over the past year, while it decreased in seven others.
