New Mexico Lawmaker Dies

Phillip Archuleta, a New Mexico state lawmaker and a longtime labor and civil rights advocate, has died.

The Democratic Party of Dona Ana County says Archuleta died Tuesday from complications of pneumonia. He was 65.

Friends say Archuleta had been in a Las Cruces hospital for around a week and recently had a leg amputated.

The Las Cruces Democrat was elected to the New Mexico House in 2012 after defeating Andy Nunez and Mike Tellez. His District 36 seat in southern New Mexico covered a large portion of Dona Ana County.

He missed the 2014 New Mexico legislative session due to poor health.

In November, Archuleta lost to Nunez, who ran as a Republican to recapture his old seat.
