New Mexico Man Pleads Guilty In Federal Fraud Case

A Ojo Caliente man has pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy and mail fraud charges.

Prosecutors in New Mexico say 43-year-old Gerald Archuleta admitted to a role in a scheme to defraud the federal and state Unemployment Insurance Systems of more than $1.3 million.

Archuleta and a co-defendant were charged in a six-count indictment that was filed in March.

The two men admitted that between 2009 and 2012, they schemed to defraud the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions, the Texas Workforce Commission and the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment by making false and fraudulent claims for unemployment benefits in the names of real people.

Prosecutors say Archuleta will be sentenced to a prison term of up to 108 months and must pay more than $734,000 restitution with the co-defendant.
