New Mexico Military Bases To Stop Taking Some State IDs

Military bases in New Mexico will stop accepting some state's driver's licenses for base access next month as the federal REAL ID Act starts to be implemented.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that though some New Mexico-issued licenses and IDs are valid under REAL ID criteria until 2020, they won't be accepted for Kirtland Air Force Base after Oct. 10 unless an extension is granted. On Sept. 15 licenses from Minnesota, Missouri, Washington or American Samoa will not be accepted.

The REAL ID Act requires proof of legal U.S. residency for those who want to use state identification to access certain areas of federal facilities. New Mexico had no such requirement under the previous policy.

State officials on Tuesday said they hope to issue new REAL ID compliant licenses later this year.
