New Mexico Native To Lead National Hispanic Cultural Center

New Mexico native Rebecca Avitia will be the new director of the National Hispanic Cultural Center Albuquerque, and its first female director.

Avitia will assume the center's top staff job position on Feb. 1.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that the position has been vacant since Estevan Rael-Galvez resigned as director in March 2011. The center has had numerous directors or interim directors in the past decade.

The center conducted a national search to fill the position, resulting in the selection of Avitia.

She's an attorney who is currently working in private practice.
