New Mexico Research Company Donates Water Purifiers To Nepal

Forty handheld water purifiers are on their way the Nepal, devices that can treat up to 80 gallons of water in a few minutes.

The Albuquerque Journal reports Aqua Research LLC donated the purifiers at a cost of about $100 each. Operation Blessing is a nonprofit organization based in Virginia that will distribute them, as they did in Haiti following the earthquake there.

The devices use salt to purify the water, and operate on batteries that can be charged with solar energy or through a USB port. They can be recharged at least 500 times and clean 40,000 gallons of water.

Aqua Research President and CEO Rodney Herrington invented H2gO and said it's self-sustaining.

A private donor is sending another 20 devices to Nepal, and is matching 20 more donated by others.
