New Mexico’s Presidential Electors to Vote Monday

New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver

SANTA FE – New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver will host the official meeting of New Mexico’s presidential electors at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, December 19, 2016 in the Office of the New Mexico Secretary of State.

New Mexico’s five presidential electors will gather at 11:00 am to choose a presiding officer and secretary for the vote.  At noon, the gathered electors will cast their votes for President and Vice President of the United States.

Because presidential candidate Hillary Clinton received the majority of the vote in New Mexico in the 2016 general election, it is the electors nominated by the Democratic Party of New Mexico who get to cast their vote for president on behalf of our state.  All five electors have been nominated by Democratic Party of New Mexico Chairwoman Debra Haaland.

On January 6, 2017, during a Joint Session of Congress, the official tally of electoral votes from all 50 states and the District of Columbia will be conducted.

In New Mexico, it is a fourth degree felony for electors to cast their ballot for anyone other than the presidential candidate who received the majority of the vote cast in New Mexico (1-15-9 NMSA 1978).
