New Mexico Supreme Court Candidates Raise $161,000

Democratic and Republican candidates for a seat on New Mexico's highest court report raising about $161,000 for their campaigns so far.

The latest campaign finance reports show Democrat Barbara Vigil has spent nearly $79,000 on her campaign for the state Supreme Court compared to about $45,000 by Republican Paul Kennedy.

Gov. Susana Martinez appointed Kennedy to the Supreme Court in September to fill a vacancy created by a retirement on the five-member court. Vigil is a district judge in Santa Fe.

Vigil has raised about $100,000, with about a third of that last month. Kennedy has collected about $61,000 for his campaign, with half of that in October.

The Supreme Court candidates couldn't qualify for public financing because the court vacancy occurred after the primary election.
