GRANTS, N.M. (AP) — One New Mexico primary election is staying in the family.
KOAT-TV reports Clemente Sanchez and Maxine Velasquez, who are uncle and niece, are not letting family ties get in the way of their competition for the same state Senate seat.
The two relatives are currently locked in an election re-count in the Democratic primary race for District 30 in Cibola County.
Sanchez says he and his niece are friendly but both think they are the best to represent their district.
Election officials say provisional and absentee ballots tallied this week put Sanchez in the lead by nine votes. A recount is scheduled for later this month.
Incumbent David Ulibarri finished third in the primary and is not involved in the recount.
