(Santa Fe) – Dr. Anthony Fleg, a volunteer with the New Mexico Department of Health’s Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) and the Native Health Initiative, is receiving national recognition for his efforts to make New Mexico healthier.
Dr. Fleg, who works at UNM, received the 2016 President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition (PCFSN) Community Leadership Award. The award is given annually to individuals or organizations who improve the lives of others within their community.
New Mexico MRC Volunteer Coordinator Bobbie MacKenzie nominated Dr. Fleg for the Award, citing his work with the Native Health Initiative.
“Dr. Fleg’s compassion and dedication has taught youth to seek out communities’ strengths, assets and resources in order to promote healthy lifestyles. He has conducted anti-tobacco campaigns, mentored youth on various health issues such as exercise, hydration and nutrition to combat diabetes, and organized various health runs and walks,” said MacKenzie when she nominated Fleg. “He is an inspiration to all he comes in contact with and continues to make a healthy impact in the lives of New Mexicans though his loving service every day.”
This year, in honor of its 60th anniversary, the PCFSN presented the Community Leadership Award to 60 recipients across the country for making sports, physical activity, fitness, and nutrition-related programs available in their communities. The Department’s MRC is part of a national network of local groups of volunteers committed to improving the health, safety, and resiliency of their communities. Volunteers participate in a wide variety of events year-round. Some of the bigger events volunteers participate in include Mission of Mercy and the Bataan Death March Marathon.
