New Program At NMSU Brings Students From Ecuador

It’s a weekday afternoon on the New Mexico State University campus and college students from Ecuador are hanging out and playing cards. They’ve been studying English all day as part of a new program being held at NMSU this summer.

Josh Walker, with the Center of English Language Programs at NMSU says it’s the first year of a program being implemented through the U.S. Embassy in Ecuador and student’s host college.

“Part of the program is for them to learn English and another part of the program is for them to learn English.” Walker says, “They are all first in their family to go to college and first in their family to leave the country.”

Alex Andrade is a student taking part in the program. He shares what he is studying here at NMSU.

“I’m in the advanced level, taking classes, listening, speaking, reading, and vocabulary. One class is very interesting, it’s applied English, and we can organize everything that we learned in the other classes,” says Andrade.

Tamia Morán is studying to complete a degree in music performance in Ecuador. She is a singer who is always ready to perform.

“For me it’s amazing, because I’m from Ecuador, and this is a new place, and the people here (in New Mexico) are very friendly,” says Morán.

The students are in the middle of the eight-week English program. Also, while studying here, the students are becoming more familiar with Native American culture; they also are staying with host families so they can experience what life in the United States.
