NM Abortion Complaint Highlights Privacy Concerns

The New Mexico Medical Board is set to rule today on whether to discipline one of the few doctors in this country that openly performs late-term abortions.

The case involves a New York mother who sought an abortion from Dr. Shelley Sella in Albuquerque after she found out her nearly 9-month-old fetus had severe brain abnormalities. There were complications and the 26-year-old woman was rushed to the hospital with a ruptured uterus.

Two years later, the intimate details of her medical treatment, her mental state, her hometown and religion were made public as part of a state medical board probe initiated by anti-abortion activists.

It's a case that highlights Operation Rescue's aggressive attempts to halt abortions and raises questions about whether the tactics are an invasion of patient privacy.
