NM Communities To Get $34.6 Million From Feds

Thirty-two New Mexico communities will get a total of $34.6 million under a federal program that compensates local governments for federal lands that they can't tax.

Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell announced the payments under the 2013 Payments in Lieu of Taxes program. Across the country, about 1,900 local governments are receiving a total of $399.8 million under the program.

The Interior Department says it collects about $14 billion a year from commercial activities like oil and gas leasing, livestock grazing and timber harvesting on federal lands. A portion of those revenues are shared with states and counties.
