N.M. Judge To Resume Hearing On Election Challenge

A judge in Gallup is scheduled to resume a hearing on a lawsuit seeking to remove a legislator from the June 3 primary election ballot.

District Judge Lous DePauli Jr. began the hearing Friday on the candidacy of Rep. Sandra Jeff of Crownpoint, a maverick Democrat who has sided with the GOP and Gov. Susana Martinez on high-profile legislative votes.

DePauli previously dismissed the election challenge because he determined Jeff didn't receive proper legal notice of the lawsuit.

However, the Supreme Court Wednesday ordered the challenge back to a district court for a hearing on whether Jeff submitted enough valid voter signatures on nominating petitions to qualify as a candidate.

The Gallup Independent reports that Friday's court session went until 6 p.m. before it was adjourned until Monday.
