N.M. Land Commissioner Contest Remains Tight Race

New Mexico Land Commissioner Ray Powell is locked in a tight race with Republican challenger Aubrey Dunn.

So far, it's been a contest that has centered on Powell's management of the state's public lands.

Powell says in the last three years the office has generated a record $2.3 billion for the state accounts that fund various projects. The Democrat says he has helped transform a "badly compromised and dysfunctional office."

Dunn, a businessman and rancher, says Powell was practicing "extreme environmentalism" and hurting state businesses by supporting critical habitat for various endangered species. Dunn promised "balanced land management" allowing for timber and firewood cutting.

Powell was state land commissioner from 1993-2002 before returning to his old office in 2010.

An Albuquerque Journal poll released Tuesday showed both men were statistically tied.
