NM Land Commissioner Raising Funds For Re-Election

State Land Commissioner Ray Powell reports raising nearly $27,000 for his re-election campaign.

Powell, a Democrat, had a cash balance of $30,159 in his campaign account as of Oct. 7.

According to the latest state fundraising report, Powell's campaign received $5,000 each from the Intercontinental Potash Corp. and California developer Barry Lang, who is part of a group involved with the Mesa Del Sol project on state trust land in Albuquerque.

Powell served as land commissioner from 1993 to 2002, and returned to the post by winning election to a four-year term in 2010.

No Republican has publicly announced plans so far to run against Powell next year.

The Land Office manages 9 million acres of surface land and 13 million acres of mineral rights.
