NM Man Gets Prison Term For Stealing From Program

An Albuquerque man who admitted stealing from a federally funded program to help people facing homelessness now faces a year in prison.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says 49-year-old Francis Louis Carrillo was sentenced Tuesday on his October guilty plea to a charge of theft from a program receiving federal funds.

Carrillo was employed by Goodwill Industries of New Mexico from 2004 to 2010, initially as program manager and later as deputy director of community programs.

Federal officials say Carrillo admitted abusing his position at Goodwill by engaging in a scheme to approve and issue checks for false applications for emergency rental assistance.

Along with being sentenced to prison, Carrillo was ordered to pay $56,000 restitution.

Carrillo's plea agreement calls for dismissal of five other theft counts in a May 2012 indictment.
