NM NATIONAL LAB WINS 6 POLLUTION PREVENTION AWARDS

KRWG News – LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (KRWG) Los Alamos National Laboratory has been recognized with pollution prevention awards for 2010 from the National Nuclear Security Administration.

The northern New Mexico lab took six of the agency's 21 awards, including two for Best in Class.

The awards cover projects ranging from saving energy to creating fuels from algae.

One Los Alamos team earned Best in Class for changing how it heats electroplating baths.

The lab says that saved enough energy to heat more than 14 homes for a year.

The other Best in Class award came for sustainable projects that included starting a volunteer-run organic vegetable garden which supplied a lab cafeteria.

The federal agency also recognized a Los Alamos team for continued leadership in renewable energy research that will help commercialize biofuels.
