NM Refuge, Park Earn International Recognition

KRWG News –
ROSWELL, N.M. (KRWG) Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge and Bottomless Lakes State Park are being recognized as international wetlands of importance.

A ceremony to mark the special designation by the Ramsar Convention is being held Tuesday afternoon at Bitter Lake headquarters near Roswell. Local, state and federal officials will be in attendance.

The refuge and state park are the first sites in New Mexico to receive this global recognition. It's also the 29th wetlands designation for the United States.

The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance is an intergovernmental treaty that provides a framework for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.

In all, the convention has recognized more than 1,900 sites around the world as important wetlands.
