NM Reviews Concealed Handgun Reciprocal Agreements

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Gov. Susana Martinez's administration is reviewing New Mexico's agreements to honor concealed handgun permits issued by other states.

Public Safety Secretary Gorden Eden said Tuesday that New Mexico has agreements with 19 states to recognize their licenses for people to carry a concealed handgun.

New Mexico can honor permits from only those states with laws "at least as stringent as or substantially similar" to New Mexico's concealed handgun act.

Eden said the Department of Public Safety is reviewing the reciprocal agreements to ensure they reflect any changes in law by other states.

So far, at least six states have been found to fully meet New Mexico's requirements: Arkansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, North Carolina and Oklahoma.

Eden said the department will try to update agreements with the 13 other states.
