NMED Officials to Meet with Hurley Residents

By Marco Grajeda

Las Cruces, NM – Next Wednesday, the state environment department will hold a public meeting in Grant County.

Environment officials want to hear comments from residents regarding the proposed plan for the Hurley soils investigation unit.

According to the state agency an investigation indicated that the soil in the town of Hurley contains elevated concentrations of metal mostly copper. The contamination is a result of historic ore processing operations. Chino Mines Company has proposed removing the contaminated soil.

Any person interested in reviewing the proposed plan is asked to visit the New Mexico environment department's office in silver city.

The public meeting is scheduled for next Wednesday at seven at the Hurley Community Center.
