NMSU alumnus, internationally renowned fertility researcher to speak to students, community

Klaus Wiemer, an alumnus of New Mexico State University and internationally renowned and award-winning researcher in fertility and embryology, will visit campus next week and speak to faculty, staff, students and members of the Las Cruces community.

“My time at NMSU proved to be invaluable,” said Wiemer. “It helped me become the person I am today and helped prepare me to face all the challenges we face today both as a professional and a person.”

Wiemer, the lab director/part owner at Poma Fertility as well as owner of KEW Technology, will visit NMSU on Monday, Oct. 23, and meet with professors and students in classrooms and labs and give a public talk titled “Human IVF-Where are we now?” at 2:45 p.m. in the Gerald Thomas Hall Auditorium, Room 194.

Wiemer graduated from NMSU in 1985 with a master’s degree in reproductive physiology. He later earned his Ph.D. in reproductive physiology with an emphasis on embryology from Louisiana State University.

Wiemer has published more than 75 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on a wide range of topics in the area of clinical embryology. He was awarded the overall grand prize by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine in 1988 and was one of the first embryologists in the U.S. to achieve pregnancies with human blastocysts, a structure formed in the early development of mammals, which is transferred during an in-vitro fertilization treatment. Having successfully directed several IVF programs in the United States, Wiemer went on to oversee several IVF labs all of which consistently produced some of the highest pregnancy rates in the country.

“I felt like this was truly something that could let me work for a greater good of helping people. And yet at the same time I was getting into this field early enough that it would really allow me to get a chance to make some major contributions in people’s lives,” Wiemer said.

Dean of the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences Rolando Flores says a visit from alumni such as Wiemer gives students the opportunity to engage with role models to learn ways to make their own future careers successful.

“We are delighted to have alumni of the caliber of Dr. Wiemer visiting with students, faculty and staff because their interactions promote exchange of ideas and benefit all parties, especially the students,” Flores said. “Visits from alumni are something the college strongly encourages.”

Wiemer will begin the day with a campus tour, meet with several professors and have a presentation and discussion with students in the Animal Science Seminar about how he arrived at his current career and give students advice. The public lecture will follow. For more information on the visit, contact Robert Peterson at 575-646-4358 or peterson@nmsu.edu.
