New Mexico State University College of Business student Linsey Tabor has been selected by the National Association of Professional Surplus Lines Offices as the J.H. Blades Scholar for 2016 and awarded a three-week, all-expenses paid internship in London this summer.
Tabor is a senior from El Paso, Texas, majoring in finance and human resource management with minors in banking and risk management and insurance. She was first selected as one of 16 interns nationwide for the 2015 NAPSLO internship program. Interns spent five weeks with a NAPSLO member surplus lines insurance company and four weeks with a NAPSLO member wholesale broker.
“I had the chance to gain an unparalleled perspective of both sides of the industry by dividing time between an insurance carrier and wholesale brokerage firm,” Tabor said of the internship experience. “I was given a firsthand glimpse as to what it takes to be successful in the industry, which is not something that can necessarily be learned from a textbook.”
Following her successful internship, Tabor was invited to attend the 2015 NAPSLO annual meeting in San Diego, where she was selected as the J.H. Blades Scholar. The scholarship is one of just two international scholarships awarded by the organization each year, and provides travel, lodging and stipend funds for the scholars’ internships in London and Bermuda.
“We are extremely proud of Linsey’s accomplishment,” said Mike McGonigle, Department of Finance faculty member and director of NMSU’s Insurance and Financial Services Center, who encouraged Tabor to apply for the competitive national internship opportunity. “She’s the first NMSU student to earn this prestigious award, and it reflects well on her and on the strength of our insurance program.”
Tabor said she’s honored to receive the award and looking forward to her time in London this summer.
“It’s an incredible opportunity to enhance my knowledge of the insurance industry and gain valuable insight into the inner workings of the London market,” she said. “I’m hoping to advance my understanding of the surplus lines market and continue to build my professional network.”
After her internship, Tabor will begin her career as an underwriter at Markel Corporation in the greater New York City area.
