In honor of International Human Rights Day, the New Mexico State University Department of Interdisciplinary Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences will host a free screening of “The Trials of Spring” from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, in Domenici Hall Room 109.
The film will conclude with a moderated discussion by Hend Nafea, the subject of the film; Gini Reticker, the film’s director; and Manal Hamzeh, associate professor of interdisciplinary studies in the Women’s Studies Program.
“The Trials of Spring” is a documentary on the Jan. 25, 2011, revolution in Cairo. The film follows the story of a young Egyptian woman, Hend Nafea, who travels from her village to join millions of Egyptians in demanding the end of a 60-year neocolonial military dictatorship.
“Hend’s unyielding spirit is a testament to a universal fight for human rights and freedom,” Hamzeh said. “This is an event that speaks to many on the NMSU campus.”
The film screening and talk will stimulate discussion around a number of themes, including peace-building, social change, gender justice, rebellion, revolution, resistance, militarism, securitization, religious extremisms, heteronormativity and more.
The Women’s Studies Program, within the interdisciplinary studies department, is screening the film in celebration of the 15th anniversary of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, which recognizes women’s critical role in peace-building.
