NMSU to close running track to the general public Jan. 1; Sisbarro running trail available

New Mexico State University’s running track, one of the university’s intercollegiate athletics facilities, will close to the general public, beginning Jan. 1, 2018. Community members who had used the athletics track in the past are now encouraged to use the running trail at NMSU’s Sisbarro Park, located at the corner of Wells Street and Arrowhead Drive.

“The New Mexico State University track is currently the only athletics facility open to the public and the wear and tear is a cost we can no longer afford,” Director of Athletics Mario Moccia said. “We have a desire to upgrade the track surface and complex in the near future so we can host a Division I track meet at home, something we have not been able to do since 2006.”

For the past few weeks, the university has been reaching out to various groups who use the track to let them know about the new rules.

Located east of Aggie Memorial Stadium, Sisbarro Community Park opened in 2015. It features a running trail, exercise equipment, restroom facilities, a large grassy area and free parking.
