NMSU Chancellor Garrey Carruthers says one of his favorite events to attend every year is the College of Business’ annual scholarship luncheon.
“This has always been a big event for the college of business,” Carruthers said. “They bring the donors and the students together, they sit together, and they talk, and it’s a real winner for the donors who get to meet the students they are investing in. So, it’s always been one of the most popular events for the college of business, always great to be invited back.”
This year was even more special for Carruthers, as his Dean’s portrait was unveiled.
“I’ve seen it and it’s magnificent,” Carruthers said. “One of the local artists, Shelley Black, actually painted me twice, I have one at home that she painted, and one here. It’s a great likeness, except my hair’s messed up, so I needed to use a little more hair product.”
Carruthers says this portrait is part of his legacy at the College of Business.
“There’s a tradition in the college of business to hang a portrait of previous deans,” Carruthers said. “I think I was probably maybe the 6th or 7th dean, so we’re adding that to the gallery.”
Carruthers says his time as Dean of the College of Business were great because of the interaction he got to have with students.
“It may have been on the most pleasant times that I’ve had as a person,” Carruthers said. “I’ve been working since I was about 14 years old, and I would count the time that I was Dean of the College of business as some of the best experience I’ve had. Love the faculty and students; love to be around the students all the time. In my current job, I have to work at seeing students because they kick me upstairs. But at the College of Business I saw them everyday, talked to them everyday, enjoyed every minute of it.”
The portrait will join a gallery of portraits spanning the 50-year history of the College of Business.
