NMSU College of Education dean to speak at NAACP state convention

Don Pope-Davis, dean of the College of Education at New Mexico State University, will be the keynote speaker at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People state convention banquet hosted by the NAACP’s Doña Ana County chapter.

Pope-Davis, an expert in the field of multicultural education and psychology and a noted scholar, will speak at the Freedom Fund Banquet at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Hotel Encanto in Las Cruces. Banquet tickets are $50.

“This is a great opportunity to be in the company of those who have long labored in our community for justice and equality,” Pope-Davis said.

The theme of this year’s conference, “Steadfast and Immovable,” is based on a scripture in the Bible. The Doña Ana County chapter of the NAACP has been planning this conference for several months. The weekend will also feature several speakers and events, beginning with the Gospel Explosion at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct, 27, at the Latter Rain Harvest Fellowship Church, 401 N. Main Street in the Downtown Mall. A prayer breakfast will be held at 7 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Hotel Encanto featuring speaker the Rev. Brian Harvey, pastor of Bethel Second Baptist Church, the largest and oldest African American church in Las Cruces. There is no charge for the Gospel Explosion or the prayer breakfast.

A luncheon will take place at noon Saturday, Oct. 28, featuring Sonia Gipson Rankin, law professor and dean of curriculum at the University of New Mexico. The luncheon will also take place at Hotel Encanto. Tickets for the luncheon are $30. Workshops, a health fair and a voter registration drive round out the conference.

The NAACP was founded in 1909 in response to the horrific and unrelenting practice of lynching African Americans. It is the oldest and largest civil rights organization in the United States. The mission of the NAACP is to ensure political, educational, social, and economic equality for ALL persons and to eliminate racial hatred and discrimination. More than 100 years later, the NAACP continues to advocate social justice and has a membership of more than 100,000.
