New Mexico State University’s Department of English is accepting applications through Tuesday, May 10, for this summer’s Girlhood Remixed Technology Camp.
The camp will take place June 6-10 in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Creative Media Institute in Milton Hall on the NMSU campus.
Designed for local middle school girls in grades sixth through eighth, the camp introduces students to different types of technology, including high- and low-tech platforms such as Photoshop, InDesign and iMovie.
The camp also empowers girls with the tools and language necessary to challenge media portrayal and construct their own online identities, while working to overcome gender, economic and cultural digital divides.
This year’s theme is “What does it mean to be a girl in the digital age?” Through this, girls will learn about women’s roles and portrayals in mass media, fairytales, video games and advocacy, while working on a variety of projects, including digital narratives, films and more. The camp will culminate in a ceremony for friends and family during which the girls showcase the projects they worked on.
Students accepted for this summer camp will be eligible to receive a $50 stipend for their participation. The stipend will be distributed following complete attendance in camp activities.

Applications will be evaluated by camp directors and coaches based on the student’s interest in camp goals; the student’s future plans for writing and working with digital media and technology; and the student’s needs.
