NMSU Extension program will assist people with chronic disease management

New Mexico State University’s Doña Ana County Cooperative Extension Service will offer a free six-week Chronic Disease Self-Management Program starting on April 11.

Developed and tested by Stanford University, the CDSMP has been proven to improve health and quality of life for adults with one or more chronic health conditions.

The CDSMP helps adults with chronic health conditions learn how to manage and improve their health. Interactive workshop sessions focus on problems that are common to individuals dealing with conditions like diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, pain, depression, asthma, or high blood pressure.

Throughout the six weeks, participants focus on building skills to manage their conditions by sharing experiences and providing mutual support. Topics include pain management, nutrition, exercise, medication use, emotions and communicating with doctors.

The program will begin with an orientation at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, followed by weekly sessions from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. each Tuesday, April 11 through May 16, at the Cooperative Extension Service Office, 1170 N. Solano in Las Cruces.

To register for this free workshop or for more information about the CDSMP, call 505-850-0176 or the Doña Ana County Cooperative Extension Service at 575-525-6649. Family, friends and caregivers are also welcome to attend.

The CDSMP is supported by the New Mexico Department of Health Diabetes Prevention and Control Program and is being offered in partnership with New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service.
