NMSU graduate student to perform Mendelssohn with the NHSO this weekend

Leora Zeitlin

Diana Carolina Sanchez was singing in a choir the first time she saw a violin. “I just saw the violin, and I fell in love – that’s it,” the Colombian violinist recounted in an interview at KRWG. She began studying at a conservatory in her home town in Colombia, and “the first year I was [studying violin], I knew that was what I wanted for my whole life.” This Sunday, Sanchez will perform the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in a free concert with the New Horizons Symphony Orchestra and conductor Dr. Marianna Gabbi. She is the winner of the orchestra’s 2017 Young Artist Competition, and a master’s student in music at New Mexico State studying with violin professor Simon Gollo. She and Gabbi came to talk with Intermezzo host Leora Zeitlin about the concert, which also includes music by Elgar, Brahms, Stravinsky and Vaughan-Williams. Two orchestra members, Bill Butler and Joseph Flores, will also conduct works in the program. The concert is at 3 p.m. at the Atkinson Recital Hall.
