New Mexico State University has hired a new rodeo coach, Logan Corbett, from Murray, Kentucky, set to start next semester.
Corbett graduated from Murray State University in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science. He competed on the collegiate rodeo team at MSU for four years in bareback riding, as well as some bull riding and team roping. Corbett competed at the College National Finals Rodeo in bareback riding in 2012 and 2013.
When he started school, Corbett knew that he wanted to ride bucking horses and that he needed a degree. While he was attending school and competing, Corbett decided that he wanted to spend the rest of his life investing in students’ lives and teaching them; just like his rodeo coach did for their rodeo team.
“If it weren’t for my collegiate rodeo coach, J.D. Van Hooser, investing time in me, I couldn’t have accomplished what I did in the arena or become the new NMSU Rodeo Team coach,” Corbett said.
Starting in the middle of the season can be a challenge but Corbett is extremely excited to work with the students and put on the rodeo here at NMSU in the spring. Corbett hopes that while the athletes are at NMSU getting their degrees, he can help give them an education through real life experience alongside the opportunity to rodeo.
“I want to continue what has been put in place by the coaches before Jim Dewey Brown, as well as what he has done,” said Corbett. “He worked hard to recruit many champions, and I hope to continue the prestigious history NMSU Rodeo has in winning.”
Corbett is ready to bring the flair of MSU together with what has been established at NMSU to make the program and the NMSU rodeo in the spring a success.
“We’re going to do it big,” Corbett said.
Providing leadership and creating a great environment while rubbing elbows with the students is what Corbett hopes to do.
Corbett will officially be an Aggie and start working with the team on Jan. 4 before the spring 2016 semester.
