All area middle- and high-school students are invited to attend the fifth-annual “Languages and Cultures Day,” from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, on the first floor of New Mexico State University’s Breland Hall.
This event is sponsored by the Department of Languages and Linguistics, and features 19 interactive sessions and presentations relating to a variety of languages and cultures, including Japanese, Chinese, French, Portuguese, German, and Spanish.
“This is a great opportunity for high-school and middle-school students to practice a language they already know, and to be exposed to some with which they are unfamiliar,” said Glenn Fetzer, head of the Languages and Linguistics Department in the College of Arts and Sciences.
For each half-hour timeframe, students choose one of four presentations to attend. The sessions range from Piñata, Interactive German Skit, French pastries, Japanese language game: Onomatopoeia, Taiji Experience, French Slang, René Descartes: Father of Modern Western Philosophy, Exploring Mescalero’s Language, and Samba School.
Students do not need to register in advance. Admission is $1 per student, and parents or guardians are welcome to attend the classes with their child. Following the morning, a light lunch will be available.
For the event, enter through the north-facing doors of Breland Hall, 1525 Stewart Street, on the NMSU campus.
