NMSU Hosts Wine And Grape Field Day

With New Mexico’s grape harvest quickly approaching, New Mexico State University will host a wine and grape field day to discuss production issues from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, July 26, at the Fabian Garcia Science Center.

Bernd Maier, NMSU Extension viticulturist, said the field day is for producers and the general public alike.

“We’ll have tours through the vineyard, including the 40-plus varieties of grapes we have planted,” Maier said. “Our newly renovated Fermentation Lab will also be open for tours.”

Topics to be covered include a discussion about grape groundcovers, mulches, soil fertility and health issues by John Idowu, Extension agronomist; while Stephen Thomas, professor of entomology, plant pathology and weed science, will address vineyard groundcovers and nematodes.

The wine and grape field day is free and open to the public. No registration is required, but those with mobility concerns should call 505-929-3942 in advance of the event to arrange for assistance through the vineyard.

Fabian Garcia Science Center is located at 113 W. University Ave., in Las Cruces.
