NMSU Las Cruces Hosting State 4-H Conference

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – Members of 4-H from 30 counties will meet at New Mexico State University from July 11-15 for a week full of activities during the annual State 4-H Conference.

Scheduled functions include contests and workshops, announcement of scholarship winners and hall of fame inductees, state officer elections, dances and a talent show.

"This event gives youth the opportunity to meet other 4-Hers, display their contest skills, gain and demonstrate their leadership and citizenship abilities and have fun," said Amy Zemler,4-H youth activities specialist.

This year's guest speaker is Kenya Masala, who will give a presentation that includes a "rhythm-based program," wherein participants are asked to play a percussion instrument and learn about working together.

During the conference, approximately $5,000 in scholarship money will be awarded to high school and college students who have demonstrated leadership skills and other special abilities. Attendees will commemorate New Mexico State 4-H's 99th year with the theme "Rock with the past, roll with the future."

"Students often look forward to the state conference because it gives them an opportunity to qualify for national competitions in events such as livestock judging, public speaking, entomology, horse judging and much more," Zemler said.
