Las Cruces – The New Mexico State University TRiO Student Support Services recently received a five-year grant for more than $2 million from the U.S. Department of Education.
A campuswide collaboration between student success centers at Hardman Hall and Zuhl Library, the Division of Student Success and academic departments will enable the program to continue providing mentoring, tutoring, leadership development, academic workshops and cultural and educational events to students.
Student Support Services participants receive a variety of academic success and social support services to assist with the transition to the university.
"Adjustments to the academic rigor of a research university and to college life can be overwhelming," said Anthony Marin, director of the Student Success Center at Hardman Hall. "The uniqueness of this program includes mentoring and tutoring components centered on a peer model, which has proven to be effective in assisting program participants to persist and graduate from New Mexico State University."
An added service, financial and economic literacy, will be offered in the new grant year, which starts Sept. 1.
"The U.S. Department of Education wants us to partner with financial and economic experts to inform program participants of the importance of personal fiscal responsibility and the impact that such a responsibility has on the global economy," Marin said.
First funded on campus in 1971, the goals of Student Support Services are to increase the retention and graduation rates of first generation (neither parent graduated from college with a four-year degree), low-income and students with a disability.
