NMSU Las Cruces Turns Cooperative Extension Publications Into eBooks

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – Want to learn how to recycle old clothes? How about a tutorial on how to mow the lawn or ways to shop smarter with coupons? Thanks to New Mexico State University, anyone can now download these and other Cooperative Extension Service publications to an e-reader or other mobile device, as well as find them online
or in print.

So far, 23 publications are online and can be downloaded but more will be added. The plan is to convert the last two years of Extension publications into HTML, PDF and eBooks formats while producing future publications the same way.

"Our goal in producing these eBooks was to make available useful information in a mobile format that would permit a farmer in the field to read about crop diseases, or perhaps someone at home in their kitchen can use their iPad or Kindle to follow instructions to make cinnamon rolls," said Ana Henke, Extension/Experiment Station publications supervisor.

Currently, Extension eBooks are available in these topic areas: agronomy, livestock and range, clothing, food and nutrition, family resource management, horticulture and health.

"The nice thing about Extension publications is that they expire every five years. As we are learning more about this changing technology, I can see eBooks we're publishing right now becoming interactive versions in five years."

To access these publications, go to http://aces.nmsu.edu/pubs/ebooks/welcome.html. Download instructions are provided on the website. New publications are posted frequently.

"Being able to provide our publications in this new and exciting format is just another way that Extension continues to provide useful information to New Mexicans."
