NMSU Model U.N. Team Hosts Salvadoran Ambassador

El Salvador’s ambassador to the United Nations Ruben Zamora will be a special guest of New Mexico State University’s Model United Nations team from 6-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, in Breland Hall Room 179, 1525 Stewart Street, on the NMSU campus.

Zamora will come to Las Cruces fresh from attending the 69th Session of the U.N. General Assembly, which runs through Oct. 1. He will give a public talk, discuss his role in the U.N. and take questions from the audience.

Once considered a rebel prohibited from entering the United States, Zamora has served as the Salvadoran Ambassador to the United States since April 2013 and as the Ambassador to India from 2009 to 2013. Last month he was appointed Permanent Representative of El Salvador to the United Nations.

NMSU’s Model U.N. students in the College of Arts and Sciences are excited to be able to meet and discuss issues with the Salvadoran ambassador so soon after the recent session.

“It will be an honor to be able to speak with Dr. Zamora,” said Theadora Trejo, Model U.N. president and junior majoring in government and French. “He has a fascinating background and we encourage others in the community to come take advantage of this great opportunity.”

An experienced politician, Zamora represented his government in writing Sustainable Development Goals for his country over the last 18 months, focused on inequality and economic policies addressing it. The U.N. Sustainable Development Goals are expected to take effect next year.

Zamora received a law degree from the University of El Salvador and a Masters in political science from the University of Essex in the United Kingdom. He has been a visiting professor at Stanford University and a visiting researcher at the University of Notre Dame and the Wilson Center, a non-partisan policy forum for tackling global issues through independent research.

The talk is free and open to the public and refreshments will be provided. For more information contact Trejo at theadora@nmsu.edu
