NMSU plans fourth annual Ride for 4-H Clover motorcycle tour

Scenic northern New Mexico will be the setting for riders in the fourth annual Ride for the 4-H Clover motorcycle tour Aug. 26-28.

Participants will experience the thrill of riding among some of New Mexico’s most dramatic settings, from colorful geologic formations at Abiquiu to the forests of Red River. They’ll also have a chance to learn about New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service and Agricultural Experiment Station Extension and outreach activities in northern New Mexico.

“This year’s ride will not only be a great opportunity to learn about Extension and Research programs in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, but also an opportunity to support the New Mexico 4-H Program,” said Jon C. Boren, associate dean and director for the Cooperative Extension Service. “You will experience great fellowship and the beauty of northern New Mexico.”

Ride for the 4-H Clover is an awareness-building campaign first envisioned by NMSU Regents Vice Chair Mike Cheney as a way for people to learn about the many opportunities New Mexico’s youth can experience through the Cooperative Extension Service 4-H program. Cheney and NMSU Chancellor Garrey Carruthers invite motorcycle riders and non-riders alike to participate in the ride.

On Aug. 26, riders and other participants will get together for a launch party from 6-7:30 p.m.at Santa Fe Harley-Davidson, 4360 Rodeo Road. On Aug. 27, the group will gather again for an opening ceremony from 7:30-8:30 a.m., also at Santa Fe Harley-Davidson.

The group will depart Santa Fe on Airport Road and NM 599, then on to U.S. 285 to U.S. 84. They’ll stop at Echo Amphitheater near Ghost Ranch for a break and program at 9:30 a.m.

They’ll continue north to Tierra Amarilla, then on to Hopewell Lake in the Carson National Forest for a lunch stop. Next stop will be a fuel stop in El Prado at 2:15 p.m.

The group will then turn north on NM 522, joining the Enchanted Circle route. They’ll stop briefly in Red River, then continue on to Taos, arriving at 4:45 p.m. and checking into the Sagebrush Inn. At 6:30, riders will reconvene for dinner and a program at the Sagebrush Inn.

On Aug. 28, riders will depart Taos at 9 a.m., bound for NMSU’s John T. Harrington Forestry Research Center, where they’ll arrive at 10 a.m. for a break and a program. At 11 a.m., they’ll depart for Las Vegas via NM 518 and I-25. They’ll have a fuel stop at Romeroville, then continue on to Santa Fe Harley-Davidson for lunch, a fuel stop and closing remarks.

All proceeds benefit Cooperative Extension Service 4-H youth programs. Registration fee of $75 includes reception on Friday evening, lunches along the route, dinner in Taos, breaks, a commemorative pin, a long-sleeved commemorative T-shirt, a small stuffed animal and access to reduced rates at partnering hotels along the route.
