A historian, a biologist and an art gallery director at New Mexico State University will share their perspectives on topics ranging from art to Ebola to J. Robert Oppenheimer during the second Salon Discovery.
“The Salon Discovery series provides opportunities for some of our outstanding faculty and staff to share their expertise on current, relevant and intriguing topics,” said NMSU Provost Dan Howard. “This is an opportunity for others at the university, as well as the broader Las Cruces area community, to become more knowledgeable about a variety of topics in an informal setting.”
NMSU will present the second Salon Discovery from 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, in the S.P. and Estelle Yates Theater in Pete V. Domenici Hall on the NMSU campus.
Three speakers will give 15-minute talks, with question and answer sessions following each talk.
The speakers will include:
– Kathryn Hanley, associate professor of biology, who will speak on “Beyond Ebola: What Lurks in the Shadow of the Forest?” Hanley is a Distinguished Career Award Winner from the NMSU University Research Council and chair of the American Committee on Arthropod-Borne Viruses.
– Marisa Sage, gallery director at the NMSU Art Gallery, who will speak on “The Curator as Artist.” Sage is founder of “Like the Spice Gallery,” in Brooklyn, New York.
– Jon Hunner, professor in the Department of History, who will speak on “Inventing J. Robert Oppenheimer.” Hunner is author of “Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer, the Cold War and the Atomic West.”
Light refreshments will follow the talks. Admission is free.
