NMSU President Selected For National Commission

New Mexico State University President Barbara Couture has accepted an appointment as a member of the American Council on Education's Commission on Lifelong Learning.

"I look forward to the opportunity to become more deeply involved in the national discussion of lifelong learning, and representing NMSU's unique perspective in this area," said Couture, whose term is from 2012-2014. "Lifelong learning has been a key goal throughout my personal and professional life, and is a cornerstone among New Mexico State University's mission of teaching, research and service."

ACE represents the interests of more than 1,600 campus executives, as well as 200 leaders of higher education-related associations and organizations. Together, ACE member institutions serve 80 percent of today's college students. In its role as the major coordinating body for the nation's higher education institutions, ACE provides leadership on key higher education issues and influences public policy through advocacy, research and program initiatives.

The Commission on Lifelong Learning helps guide the activities of the Center for Lifelong Learning and its programs, which include military programs, including military evaluations and military registries (for the Army, Navy and Marine Corps); corporate programs, including the College Credit Recommendation Service, Credit by Examination Program and civilian registries (a series of computerized educational recordkeeping systems that list ACE-evaluated courses); and research related to adults and their access to and success in higher education.

Commission members advise the ACE staff on lifelong learning trends and other matters pertaining to its programs and services. The commission reviews policy statements, guidelines and principles of good practice on adult learning issues and, where appropriate, submits recommendations for board action.

Couture joins NMSU Vice President and Provost Wendy Wilkins in service to the organization. Wilkins serves on the ACE Commission on Leadership. Her term ends in 2015.
