NMSU receives local business support for Aggie Athletics

During the Aggie Men’s basketball match-up on Friday against the University of New Mexico Lobos, New Mexico State University and Aggie Athletics recognized a recent local business investment in its student-athletes.

Kyocera and Kevin and Becky Horner of PTS Office Systems, Inc. teamed up and contributed $50,000 to the Aggie Athletics Club (AAC), the 6th Man Club and the Football Success Fund.

The family’s long-standing tradition of NMSU support stems from their roots as Aggie alumni. Becky Horner graduated from NMSU in 1992, a second-generation Aggie after her father, Eugene Price, earned his NMSU degree in 1966. Kevin Horner, an Aggie baseball player himself, understands the game-changing play a sports scholarship provides.

"As a former student-athlete, I can appreciate the challenges of athletic department funding and the hard work of these students,” said Kevin Horner. “PTS Office Systems, with our partner, Kyocera, is pleased to contribute to NMSU Athletics in meaningful ways to assist the programs and help student-athletes thrive."

Building “today’s champions and tomorrow’s leaders,” the Aggie Athletics Club has supported successful student-athletes for years, including this past year with all students achieving a cumulative 3.066 GPA.

“The Aggie Athletics Club provides important support for all of our intercollegiate student-athletes,” said NMSU Chancellor Garrey Carruthers. “This contribution, on behalf of the Horner family, is an investment in these talented students, and it will help them find success in the classroom, in their communities and beyond.”

Giving specifically to the AAC provides competitive support for all 16 NMSU sports teams that cover student-athlete educational expenses, including books, fees, nutrition as well as room and board.

“We ask all 400 of our student-athletes to balance academic integrity, social responsibility and competitive intensity,” said NMSU Athletics Director Mario Moccia. “With support from generous donors, these students experience new opportunities to learn how to win with teamwork, how to use their spotlight to give back to the community and how to balance competition and giving with the self-initiative to earn a well-rounded education at NMSU.”
