NMSU Robotics Camp Underway In Las Cruces

Students from across New Mexico have the opportunity to take part in robotics camps that will enhance their understanding and knowledge of basic power tools, engineering technology and how to go from design to a built product.

The robotics camps, hosted by the Engineering New Mexico Resource Network, part of the New Mexico State University College of Engineering, will be held across the state throughout the summer, but the first of the Las Cruces camps is currently ongoing. Nearly 20 students from Las Cruces, El Paso, Silver City and the surrounding areas are participating in the three-day camp.

“It’s a great opportunity for students to use tools and solve problems in a safe and creative environment to enjoy science and technology,” Shelly Gruenig, camp leader, said.

Students learn engineering processes as they build a robot alongside teammates. On the third and final day of the competition, students will compete in a competition. The camp is an excellent way to prepare for the BEST (Boosting Engineering and Science Technology) robotics competition sponsored by the NMSU College of Engineering. Students are also required to write an engineering manual for their robot.

The camp is hosted by the Engineering New Mexico Resource Network, part of the New Mexico State University College of Engineering. The second Las Cruces camp will begin on Thursday, June 19 and will continue until June 21. Camps also are scheduled in Albuquerque, Hobbs and Farmington. If interested in attending, go to http://engr.nmsu.edu/outreach.shtml or call 575-646-2913 for more information.
