The NMSU Agricultural Science Center at Clovis will host its annual field day Aug. 3.
Science center superintendent and weed specialist Abdel Mesbah said the purpose of the field day is to bring farmers, ranchers, extension agents, NMSU researchers, dairy and other industry representatives together to visit and interact with each other. It’s also an opportunity to share ideas and opinions about different cultural practices.
“This is the perfect opportunity for growers to ask questions and get answers in a one-on-one setting, while attendees have the chance to view current research plots and to see up close what is working and what isn’t working,” Mesbah said.
Registration and morning refreshments begin at 7:30 a.m., followed by welcome addresses from Mesbah, Flores and NMSU Agricultural Experiment Station Associate Dean and Director Dave Thompson.
The field tour starts at approximately 8:30 a.m. and will cover the following:
– Market outlook for feed grains (DeDe Jones, Texas A&M Agrilife Economist)
– Cover crops in a winter wheat-sorghum-fallow rotation (Rajan Ghimire, NMSU Agronomist)
– Teff grass as an alternative hay crop (Mark Marsalis, NMSU Extension Forage Specialist)
– Huskie for weed control in sorghum (Mesbah)
– Variety update on Valencia peanuts (Naveen Puppala, NMSU Peanut Breeder)
– Disease management in peanut and cotton (Terry Wheeler, Texas A&M Plant Pathologist)
– Live buffer strips under center pivot irrigation (Sangu Angadi, NMSU Crop Physiologist)
– Sugarcane aphids: sorghum tolerance variety trial (Jane Pierce, NMSU Entomologist)
A catered lunch – sponsored by a local business – will be provided after the tour at approximately 11:45 a.m. The afternoon will be reserved for individuals or small groups interested in touring specific trials or plots.
The agricultural science center is 13 miles north of Clovis on Highway 288.
